Senior Underwriting Support Specialist
The Commercial Lines Middle Market Assistant Underwriting Team is looking for a Senior Underwriting Support Specialist to join our team. The specialist will have a designated North Carolina territory of Middle Market agencies and will work with Underwriters to review and quote new business submissions.
The Senior Underwriting Support Specialist will provide timely and high-quality customer service to brokers, agents, and underwriters for all commercial lines of business and serve as point of contact for agency partners. Under minimal supervision, uses advanced knowledge and skills to act as a subject matter expert for the underwriting team, solve problems, provide training, and leadership to others. Other responsibilities include issuing renewals under $25,000, prepping renewals for the Underwriter to review and issue, & process endorsements within the assigned territory. Has the ability to effectively manage complex accounts and/or workload at a higher than average workload volume (i.e. premium/transactions). The ideal candidate will have 2-3 years working in the Commercial Lines Middle Market space.
Responsibilities
- Gathers, reviews, and ensures the accuracy of information to determine proper processing for the most complex accounts.
- Performs various pre-underwriting and basic underwriting activities for the most complex accounts, such as qualifying requests gathering analyzing data, selecting rates and forms for coverage, and entering info into database for pricing reporting.
- Will make recommendations to Underwriter based on analysis of accounts. Routinely constructs new business and renewal proposal drafts for larger and more complex accounts.
- Actively engages with Underwriter in management of book of business. Collaborates consistently with underwriter on risk selection, pricing and initiates resolutions on audit and claim issues.
- Supports a higher than average level of premium volume and/or larger and more complex accounts.
- Represents the department and participates in customer meetings and service presentations as needed.
- Serves as a key point of contact for brokers and agents.
- Responsible for the coordination and scheduling of agent and Broker system training in agency Portal, eCLIQ, etc. and monitoring subsequent business impact.
- Independently initiates calls to discuss risks/coverage or to follow up on missing information.
- Has an advanced knowledge of company insurance products and supports underwriting and distribution activities by explaining new or revised products and processes to agents and brokers.
- May participate in cross selling activities.
- Partners with underwriters and distribution to engage key agencies/key accounts and provide insights.
- Actively initiates, leads and participates in problem solving activities to define problems, assess current state, identify root causes, design and test solutions, implement solutions, and sustain and continuously improve to permanently eliminate problems.
- Collaborates with team members by engaging in and/or leading daily huddles, generating suggestions to meet customer needs and support the work of the team.
- Utilizes continuous improvement methodologies to improve processes procedures in an effort to work more efficiently and effectively. Acts quickly as a resource to others in an effort to overcome obstacles in the workload and meet timelines.
- Assists manager with completing monthly reports and analyzing data. Acts as a mentor while guiding, training and coaching less experienced team members. Assists with onboarding of new employees. Is a subject matter expert regarding guidelines, procedures and systems.
- Continually evaluates training needs and helps create, enhance and implement to stay current with business and system changes.
Qualifications
Preferred skills:
- Property and Casualty insurance experience
- Proficient in Excel
Qualifications:
- Competencies typically acquired through a Bachelor`s degree or equivalent experience/training and 2-3 years in a senior level underwriting assistant role or at least 5 years of progressively more responsible underwriting support experience
- Demonstrated proficiency in concepts of loss analysis, primary and excess pricing and policy production (booking vs billing) and advanced knowledge of property/casualty insurance, underwriting, and insurance operations
- Advanced ability on coverage, such as identifying unusual coverage issues, limits or loss exposures driven by frequency or severity for the Underwriter
- Can identify credit, loss control and other issues that trigger referrals; Understands new and renewal guidelines and rule application, timeframes for non-renewal statutory notification timelines, and key underwriting questions to ask (loss history, financial information, complex endorsement request, account issues, etc
- Highly effective written and interpersonal skills needed for interaction with brokers, agents, and internal partners, and to provide guidance and technical direction to others; must exemplify teamwork
- Demonstrated ability to retrieve, enter and interpret information from various applications
